What is something that most people consider a modern-day convenience that you consider to be a pain in the neck?

There are a lot of modern-day conveniences that make my life and my job a hell of a lot easier. I'm loathe to consider any of them to be a pain in the neck. For whatever negative aspect something may have, the positives will outweigh it, end of story.

Though I do have to wonder why some idiot thought there was a need for karaoke machines. They might not be a convenience, but they're definitely a pain.

Do you think you'd ever be able to take a significant amount of time off from blogging? Or how about just the internet and email?

I have, I do, and I will.

ooc: Questions found here.

Does it count if I almost kissed my ass goodbye?

I've been trying to track down a couple of people since they were sighted in Arthur, Nebraska. Yeah, I've never heard of it, either, and I don't know how the hell my contacts found them. It was the first good lead I'd gotten in over six months, though, so I got out there as quickly as I could. If I found them, I was going to have a fight on my hands for two reasons:

1) They think I'm dead.
2) If they realize I'm not dead, they're still going to look at me as the enemy.

Still, any fight would be worth it if they'd end up letting me help them.

I made it to their location, checked my watch as I stood outside the small wooden house they were allegedly occupying. Allegedly. Key word. It was a few seconds to midnight local time, but I didn't have time to think about the new year. As I approached the house, the front door was flung open, and a man I'd never seen in my life started shooting a gun in the air. Welcome to New Year's celebrations in the middle of nowhere. My automatic response was to draw my gun, which drew his attention.

Trespassers will be shot isn't a sign one puts up for shits and giggles, kids.

While at the grocery store you bump into an oddly familiar face--it's your evil twin! The evil twin follows you home and tries to convince your family (or friends) that he/she's you. How did you prove to your loved ones that you are the real you and the twin is an imposter?

I didn't pick this one because it was the most appealing choice. It's just the most amusing. Depending on who you speak to, I'm my own evil twin. See, over the course of my career, I've had to put on different faces and create different personas in order to get my work accomplished. I could be a freshfaced angel one day, a traitorous bastard the next. I'm extremely familiar with that look someone gets when they realize that they've just been royally screwed over by yours truly. You know the one. Betrayal, disbelief, anger and embarrassment all wrapped up in a nice little wide-eyed gaze.

So, friends, if I ever bumped into my allegedly evil twin and he followed me home (pretending I actually had a real home with a family or whatever passes for a full life these days), everyone would probably breathe a sigh of relief. Really, anyone but me would be a great change of pace to have around.

Actually, no. Now that I think about it, if some freak with my face followed me home, I'd probably shoot him. I know you just can't trust guys who look like that.

Write a ficlet on the topic of sin.

It was late, the church deserted save for the lone figure that slowly walked towards the confessional.

"Forgive me, father, for I have sinned. It's been twenty years since my last confession."

"Tell me, my child. Why has it been so long?"

"I've been busy. The life I lead doesn't make it possible for me to attend church with any regularity."

The priest nodded, visible through the screen between them. "But surely you know that we must always make time for Our Lord."

"Yes, well, if the Lord was signing my paychecks, I'd be able to give Him all the time He needs." A small smile, then a whispered, "I'm sorry," that was anything but contrite. "I shouldn't make light of my situation. I'm not doing too well, father. I think I'm going to hell."

"What have you done to make you think this?"

There was no answer for a few moments, then movement on the other side of the screen as the figure exited the confessional. Suddenly, in one swift motion, the priest's door was opened, and a gun was pointed in his face.

A slow smile, then two shots, one in the middle of the forehead, one through the heart.

"I killed a priest," he whispered to the dead man, then turned and calmly walked away.

What is the most embarassing CD or DVD in your collection? Why?

I don't have many possessions. I find it's better to travel light and things only slow you down. It's for this reason that I've allowed myself very few luxuries in my life, the latest being one of those music players that can carry thousands of songs without the need to buy CDs. Give me a cyber café and a chance to download some songs, and I'm set.

Contrary to popular belief, I am a human being with the same needs as most people. After my basic needs for food and shelter have been met, I can indulge a little in the things that keep me in touch with my humanity. (Laugh at that and I'll fucking shoot you.) These include good books and good music. I have excellent taste in most things, and because I lack the opportunity to enjoy them on a regular basis, I will make a concerted effort to savor what I can, when I can.

That being said, some people might be too self-conscious to admit that they listen to ABBA's greatest hits while they clean their guns, but I don't have time to be embarrassed by things like that.

An ear pressed to the door, listening for any movement on the other side. A key eased into the lock and turned. Tumblers click into place and the door is shoved open as a gun is drawn.

No one in Alex's building would think twice about the way he enters his apartment. They're all too busy minding their own business and wallowing in the squalor of their own lives to worry about his. But until everyone on (and off) the planet who wants him dead is gone, he can't take any chances on walking into a trap.

Once the apartment has been cleared, he relaxes a little. The gun will still be on his nightstand when he goes to bed, and his sleep will be light, but for now he knows it's safe to shower, eat and prepare for the next day.

The shower is welcome after a day of running errands - the euphemism he uses to describe his often illicit activities. Today hadn't been as bad as most, his current employer only needing him to play courier, but he had been required to visit some unsavory characters and their equally unsavory surroundings. As many squalid, dank and disgusting places he's been, he's learned to savor the true luxury of a hot shower.

His apartment is spartan, guaranteeing he'll leave no clues behind should he need to make a quick escape. The only extravagance he allows himself is the stack of books next to the threadbare couch. Tonight, it will be Anna Karenina granting him a much needed escape while he eats a simple dinner. The downtime allows him to clear his head and readies him for bed. His sleep will more than likely be restless and not deep enough - carefree, restful sleep is one luxury he will never have - but it will suffice in readying him for another day of this thing he calls his life.

Iceberg picture

Lackey. Assassin. Thug. Traitor.

On the surface, I appear to be all of these things and nothing more. I know it eases a lot of minds if people can believe that, but nothing's ever that simple. Appearances, as a wise man once said (I assume it was a man), can be deceiving. Yes, on a superficial level, I am all of those things, but it's not without reason. I don't kill for sport, I kill for a purpose; I don't betray just to be a prick, I do it for survival; I do whatever dirty work or deeds that are asked of me if they'll advance my cause. I don't make excuses for my actions - people who do that are pussies - I'm only telling you the way things are.

The next time you choose to judge me because of what I've done, remember two things: I don't give a shit what you think of me, and I wouldn't think twice about doing them to you if I had to.

How much is too much?

If mankind had the first clue about how to answer this, there'd be no addictions, no crime, and no wars waged in the pursuit of power, territory and overall domination. By the time you realize you've bitten off more than you can chew, you're in deep shit. If you're lucky, you only end up ruining your life instead of losing it completely.

Or, if you choose to look at this from the angle of human endurance, what constitutes 'too much' depends on physical and mental strength. I can guarantee that what I've been through in my life would be too much for the average man. I also know that there are men who can suffer greater trials than anything I can survive.

'Too much' is relative and too subjective for me to feel comfortable giving a definitive answer. For me, there's no such thing because I've learned too many lessons about my own limits. I will never let myself get to the point where anything is too much for me.

1.18.1 What's the biggest whopper you ever told?

Why not ask about the messiest kill or the worst mistake I've ever made? It's all equally meaningless and you'll be guaranteed the same answer: There is no biggest or messiest or worst. There's only action and reaction, and sometimes a shit storm of the highest degree when the goddamn reaction isn't exactly what I was expecting. Like any storm, I can usually ride it out and keep my head low until the next time I need to resurface.

There are some who'd be of the opinion that any lie characterized as the biggest should have the biggest impact - there has to be a way to quantify what constitutes a big versus a little lie, right? Impact seems as good a way as any. Since I value my opinion above anyone else's, though, I call bullshit on that idea. Sometimes it's what would be considered the smallest, most innocuous untruth that can lead to all hell breaking loose, while a "whopper" lands with a thud. That only proves my point. There's the lie, there's the consequence of that lie, and that's all, folks. In this case, size doesn't matter.

I don't expect anyone who doesn't sustain himself on a diet of deception and quick thinking to fully comprehend what I'm saying, so here's an nice, neat, little answer for you.

The biggest whopper I've ever told is, "Nice tie, Mulder."
